10 patriotic Hindi movies to watch this Independence Day

With 15 August, 2021 as the 74th year anniversary of Indian Independence, the day is commemorated with pride and a sense of nationality. The ongoing pandemic still has people working from home. To make it better this year’s Independence day falls on a sunday? People can celebrate the day by rewatching some of their favorite patriotic movies to invoke the sense of pride of being an Indian. Here is a list of 10 patriotic Hindi movies to watch that are inspiring and emotional to celebrate the day in the right manner. 

#1. 1971

Based on a true story of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war, the movie has a brilliant ensemble cast of  Manoj Bajpayee, Ravi Kishan, Piyush Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal and others.  The film is about six soldiers of the Indian Army taken as prisoners in the Indo-Pakistani war. The war was caused by the rebellion of East Pakistan to separate itself from West Pakistan and create a new country.

#2. Mangal Pandey: The Rising

Based on the life of the brave Indian soldier, Mangal Pandey, the film is a historical drama biopic. Mangal Pandey was one among the first to spark the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, the first rebellion in line for Indian Independence. The role of Mangal Pandey is donned by Aamir Khan. 

#3. Rang De Basanti

The hit film follows a British student who travels to India to document the story of five freedom fighters who took an active part in the Indian Revolutionary Movement. For the same reason, she casts five young men who later decide to fight corruption in their own country. The film features a brilliant set of actors and actresses and was a box office hit. 

#4. Lakshya

Starring Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan, Lakshya is a war drama film directed by Farhan Akhtar. It is a coming of age story of a young man’s transformation into an army officer set against a backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War.

#5. Swades

Swades is a drama film renowned for its universal critical acclaim. Parts of the story is inspired from the Kannada novels Chigurida Kanasu by K. Shivaram Karanth and Bapu Kuti by Rajni Bakshi.Sharukh Khan plays the lead role and the music and background score is composed by A.R Rahman and lyrics were penned by Javed Akhtar. It’s one of the patriotic Hindi movies you should definitely watch. 

#6. The Legend of Bhagat Singh

Directed by Rajkumar Santhoshi, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh is a biographical period film about Bhagat Singh, a brave freedom fighter. The film is an account of his life from his birth upto the day he was hanged to death.

#7. Lagaan

Critically acclaimed and recognized for various international accolades, Lagaan is a sports musical set in the villages near Bhuj. Revolving around a group of villagers who learn a new game alien to them in order to not pay heavy taxes levied on them, the film was a success globally. This was the first project under Aamir Khan Productions with Aamir Khan playing the lead role. 

#8. Hey Ram

Hey Ram is an historical crime drama written, produced and directed by Kamal Haasan. He also plays the lead role in the movie and was simultaneously made in Tamil and Hindi language. Sharukh Khan plays a supporting character in the movie, marking his debut in Tamil films. 

#9. Airlift

Airlift is a historical drama film. It is about Ranjit Katyal, a businessman from Kuwait who carried out the evacuation of Indians, based in Kuwait, during its invasion by Saddam Hussein. The story is inspired from a real life Indian businessman, Mathunny Mathews. The film has emerged as a blockbuster among Indian and Global audiences. This is one of the most entertaining patriotic Hindi movies to watch. 

#10. Shershaah

Shershaah is a biographical war film which stars Siddharth Malhotra as the Kargil war hero, Captain Vikram Batra. The film marks the Bollywood debut of the Tamil director Vishnu Vardhan. It is an account of the PVC awardee brave Indian soldier whose contributions helped us win the Kargil war of 1999. Shershaah is one of the most exciting Hindi OTT releases of this month and has received rave reviews so far.
