Two people were arrested by the Visakhapatnam Rural Police on Thursday night as they were allegedly transporting 1,720 kg ganja in their van. The two suspects were caught during regular vehicle checks at Gabbada, Narsipatnam. The police seized the ganja and took the two suspects into custody. The market value of the ganja seized in Visakhapatnam District has been estimated to be around Rs. 1.7 crore.
The two accused have been identified as Rajendra and Ravi, hailing from GK Veedhi Mandal of the Vizag agency area.
On Thursday night, a team of Narsipatnam Police (Rural) were conducting regular vehicle checks in the Gabbada area. During the checks, they stumbled upon a van that came from Chintapalle side and was heading towards Narsipatnam. On stopping the van, the police officials found ganja hidden inside the van.
Further investigation has revealed that the accused were taking the ganja towards Tuni in East Godavari District and then planned to distribute it to various parts of the country. By checking the suspects’ call records, the police found an order made by a person called Ganesh from Maharashtra. It has also been uncovered that there are three more accused in this particular ganja smuggling case who are yet to be caught.
10.3 kg hash oil seized
In a separate case, 10.3 kg of hash oil aka liquid ganja was seized by Visakhapatnam Police at Golugonda in the district. This hash oil is expected to be worth around Rs. 10 lakh. The police caught 3 persons trying to smuggle this hash oil.
The accused have been identified as P Siva, K Koteswara Rao and G Mahesh from Chintapalle Mandal.
Golugonda Police got into action after receiving a tip about the liquid ganja being transported. Accordingly, a team of police officers were conducting checks at Kothapalem when four people arrived on two motorcycles. The four suspects attempted to escape from the police but only one succeeded.
The remaining three suspects have been arrested and the liquid ganja has been seized. The police are searching for the fourth accused in this case.
Of late, the police have been stepping up vigilance in the Visakhapatnam District to curb the smuggling of ganja by conducting regular vehicle checks at all roads exiting the agency areas. Due to this, some of the smugglers have turned to transporting ganja in liquid form in order to evade the police.
