In another illegal case of ganja smuggling, Visakhapatnam Rural Police seized 2,208 kg of ganja being smuggled to Bhubaneswar by two people from the agency area. The incident took place at the V Madugula area in the Vizag Agency on Friday morning.
Visakhapatnam Rural Police have arrested two persons in connection with the ganja smuggling. The accused have been identified as Chikkan Pradhan and Chandan.
On receiving information, a team led by Chodavaram Circle Inspector Syed Ilyas Mohammed stopped a lorry at Garikabandhi Check-post which was heading towards Bhubaneswar. When they checked the heavy vehicle, they found ganja packed in 69 bags, with each bag weighing around 32 kg. The vehicle was heading to Bhubaneswar from Paderu. According to the police, the ganja seized from Visakhapatnam Agency has been valued to be around Rs 2 crore.
According to the Sub-Inspector P Rama Rao, of V Madugula Police Station, the two accused travelled from Odisha a week ago and procured the ganja from interior parts of the Vizag Agency. “To escape from vehicle checks by the police at the check-post, the accused covered the ganja bags with a huge quantity of overripe pineapples, so that they could dominate the smell of ganja,” said Sub-Inspector Rama Rao.
However, thorough checks by the police resulted in them finding the ganja bags hidden underneath. A case has been registered against this smuggling of ganja. Recently, another team of smugglers was caught transporting 860 kg of ganja into the Visakhapatnam Agency. Police have been on alert, catching the smugglers while conducting anti-drug awareness drives in the district.
