Following Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s announcement in the Assembly regarding the possibility of setting up 3 capitals for Andhra Pradesh, opinions have been surfacing on social media platforms. The Chief Minister said that even AP must be innovative and take inspiration from countries like South Africa that have three capital cities. Mr. Reddy said that Visakhapatnam can be the executive capital
, while Amaravati can be the legislative capital and Kurnool – the judicial capital. He added that he would have liked to have Amaravati as the state’s only capital, but the project has tuned out to be expensive for the state’s exchequer. Now, the Chief Minister has suggested that instead of investing all the funds in one city alone – the concept of decentralization be applied, and three capitals can be setup. He said that since Visakhapatnam already has the infrastructure, it wouldn’t cost much to set up government offices including Secretariat and other departmental offices in the city.
Dissenting the concept, opposition leader and Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the YSRCP government is trying to “kill” the city of Amaravati. He was alluding to the cancellation of projects which were given a green signal during the TDP’s rule in the state. He added that such decisions by the government could stall development and decrease revenue.
Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan too, said something similar and said the government must look into the common man’s problems.
