Tragedy struck on Sunday evening when a 47-year-old woman died in a road accident in Visakhapatnam. The accident took place at around 4 PM at Kurmannapalem Junction in Vizag when the victim was travelling along with her husband on a bike. While the husband survived the accident and is undergoing treatment for injuries, the woman, unfortunately, died on the spot.
The woman has been identified as Vijayalakshmi who was married to Krishnamurthy. Krishnamurthy is an employee at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in the city. The couple was returning on a Bullet bike from a dental hospital, with Krishnamurthy driving the bike. When they arrived at Kurmannapalem Junction, a lorry came up from behind. The lorry’s mirror collided with the bullet’s mirror. Due to this, the Bullet bike lost balance and Vijayalakshmi and her husband were
flung into the air. While Krishnamurthy got lucky and fell to the bike’s left side, only suffering a hand fracture, Vijayalakshmi wasn’t so fortunate. She landed on the bike’s right side. Before she could move out of danger, the lorry went over her, crushing her head on impact. According to Duvvada Police in Vizag, Vijayalakshmi wasn’t wearing a helmet on the bike when the accident happened.
Duvvada Police have registered a case of a road accident and are investigating it while looking for the lorry driver throughout Vizag. The victim’s body has been sent to King George Hospital (KGH) in Vizag for post-mortem.
Last year, Visakhapatnam Traffic Police had made it mandatory for people riding pillion on two-wheelers in the city to wear a helmet. A fine of Rs. 100 is being implemented by the traffic police on any pillion-rider not wearing a helmet. Yet, a lot of people are seen in the city not wearing a helmet, especially the pillion-riders.
