The homemakers, students and the residents of Gnanapuram, Visakhapatnam have staged a protest against the licenses of liquor shops in the locality. Wine shops located close to the schools, colleges, churc and a temple have been asked to shut down for a couple of weeks after the protest to shift the shop from the locality. But in a dramatic but effective move to draw public attention, protesters use a Coffin this time.
What caught the attention of the people is that the protest has been done by the students and women by right in front of the shop which is located beside the Gnanapuram Main Road and the trader was not allowed to open the shutters. The women wrote the slogan “Wine makes women Widow” on the coffin and raised voices demanding the shops have to be moved away from the entire locality.
Gnanapuram is an educational hub in Visakhapatnam with St.Joseph’s, Sophia and Jubilee School around and with Peter’s Church, Zion Church and a Temple close by.
One of the residents has said that, the drunkards create nuisance on the roads and misbehave with women and girl students who keep passing by. Protestors call for these shops to be shifted in order to safeguard the women folk. Another resident added by saying that some young men who are addicted to alcohol are blowing up their hard earned money on liquor and tend to neglect their family. In the interest of law and order preservation and welfare of all parties, the protests are drawing favorable community opinion.
