According to the information given out by the Road Transport Authority (RTA), Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts have shown a considerable rise in accident fatalities in the first half of the year. These two districts have recorded the highest numbers in terms of road accident deaths, despite the number of accidents reducing in both districts.
The RTA reports indicate that the rate of road accident deaths rose by 33.33 per cent in Srikakulam District from the month of January to the month of May this year in comparison to the previous year. In Vizianagaram district the growth rate has been recorded as 30.60 per cent more than that of the previous year. There have been 168 deaths in 430 road accidents in this year while data recorded shows only 126 deaths in 469 road accidents in the year 2016. In Vizianagaram, 175 people died in 527 road accidents in the year 2017 while, 134 people died in 557 road accidents in the year 2016.
RTA is stressing on finding out the reasons behind the alarming deaths during the road accidents and has taken drastic measures to subside the number of road accidents. What is more alarming is the fat that hospitals in the district are restricted in medical facilities for treating accident casualties. Most victims are rushed to king George Hospital in Vizag. Government has been urged by the authorities to take steps for facilitating equipment and infrastructure for care of casualties and emergency cases at the earliest.
