Stephen Hawking had started the Breakthrough Listen Project with the help of the Russian billionaire Yuri Milner. The project, which is a $100 million initiative, aims at searching extra terrestrial life (alien existence).
The details of the fast radio bursts received
The project detected 15 fast radio bursts (FRBs) last week from a galaxy 3 billion light years away from the earth. FRBs last for a few seconds and erupt with enormous energies. These signals have got the scientists thinking if these emerged from an alien satellite or were just energies released from celestial bodies.
According to The Guardian, about two dozen signals were recorded earlier. 15 more signals of higher frequency have been observed from the same source. However, the earlier recordings were linked to rotating neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields. On the other hand, some explanations tried to link them up with energy sources used by aliens to power their space crafts.
An article on the New Scientist website said there’s a possibility that telescopes are picking up signals from unexplored human technology such as spy satellites.
While talking to Daily Telegraph, Vishal Gujjar, one of the scientists from the University of California Berkeley research centre, said: “We really have no idea about where they came from. If some form of life would like to produce a signal that is detectable to another civilization, this could be a way to do it. But I don’t think they’re coming from intelligent civilizations.” He also added that there are more theories than the number of sources. The trial of studying more things only leaves us with more questions to answer and weirder things to explore.
