GITAM University Visakhapatnam is playing host for a global meeting of experts from 60 countries in the 3rd World Congress on Disaster Management.
Starting from today the third World Congress on Disaster Management is on with 100 experts from 60 countries coming together at GITAM University, the host. The event will be underway for 5 days, bringing together 1000 delegates representing various governments, international organisations, scientific and technical organisations and NGOs. The event is being organized in Visakhapatnam by Government of Andhra Pradesh, Disaster Management Initiative and Convergence Society (DMICS) and GITAM University. The Chief Guest will be Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambidurai and inauguration will be done by Deputy Chief Minister N. China Rajappa.
This year’s theme is “Building resilience to disasters”. The global meet has yielded good results and the conclusions from the conference last time has acted as a model for various countries. In Visakhapatnam, the host city the disaster management conference becomes very much relevant. The coastal districts of AP, Odisha etc are susceptible to natural disasters such as cyclones.
A key point this year would be the use of robotics and artificial intelligence in the mitigation of effects of disasters. This is the largest world conference on disaster management outside the UN system.
The event will happen in 7 plenary sessions, 30 thematic sessions and 3 special feature events covering several sectors including agriculture, food security, infrastructure, production, industry, livelihood and city resilience.
