Visakhapatnam welcomed 2018 in high spirits. As many people celebrated in their own ways, the police too got busy registering cases of drunken driving.
It has been reported that the police, who conducted special drives across the city till the early hours of Monday, booked as many as 638 drunken driving cases, which is said to be the highest number of cases registered on a single day so far in the city.
With 321 cases reported on Saturday, the total number of cases registered has gone up to a startling 959.
As per a report in The Hindu, the police extended the enforcement area from Lankelapalem to Tagarpuvalasa on Sunday night and about 50 teams with about 52 alcometers and body cameras were deployed at all strategic locations.
“We also requisitioned a few additional alcometers from the Eastern Naval Command and the RTA and used the interceptor and road safety vehicles for patrolling. Even drones were used for surveillance,” ACP (Traffic) Mr. Kinjarapu Prabhakar, was quoted as saying.
Alcohol sales in Visakhapatnam district went up as the citizens revelled the onset of 2018. According to excise officials, total Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sales were recorded as 10,510 cases while beer sales were recorded as 4748 cases.
Out of the total sales of Rs 51.6 crore in Northern Andhra on New Year’s Eve, Visakhapatnam district topped the chart with a share of Rs 5.13 crore.
