In a shocking news, it has been learned that one in every three, or 36 percent of Indian women gets offensive and sexual calls or SMSes. A survey named ‘Understanding the Impact of Harassment and Spam Calls on Women,’ by popular communication app Truecaller put some shocking facts to the fore.
The survey found that while 78 percent of women receive harassment calls with inappropriate and sexual content, 82 percent get unsolicited videos and pictures with inappropriate and sexual content at least once a week. It has been revealed that while 50 percent of these calls and texts were from unknown people, stalkers and known people contributed to 11 percent and 3 percent respectively.
Women in India report 18 percent more unwanted calls than men, an increase of 5 percent from last year’s 13 percent, Truecaller said in a statement.
Shedding light on how women tackle this, Truecaller’s survey found that 65 percent blocked the person’s number, 10 percent registered a police complaint and 7 percent shamed the harasser on social media. Close to 65 percent of women were found to have taken preventive measures against such offensive calls.
Truecaller conducted the survey from 20 January to 22 February among 2,004 Indian women aged 15-35 across 15 cities in the country.
Truecaller’s Insights 2017 reported that India is plagued with the highest percentage of spam calls in the world, with the average Truecaller user receiving 22.6 spam calls per month.
