While Visakhapatnam is taking major strides in emerging as one of India’s fastest growing cities, a recent survey has revealed some disappointing facts about the city. Bengaluru based non-profit Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, organized its Annual Survey of India’s City System (ASICS) in 23 cities across 20 states in the country, based on 89 questions. The survey studied several aspects to rank the cities in terms of governance and capability to deliver urban reforms.
While Pune has been declared as the best-governed city and most equipped to deliver urban reforms, Visakhapatnam stood 17th among the 23 cities surveyed. While there weren’t too many issues in the city, the representatives said that the problems reported in the past have been persisting for quite long and the same issues are being faced again and again by the citizens in Visakhapatnam.
However, the report has revealed that the quality of life in Visakhapatnam is better as compared to that in the cities of Jaipur, Chennai, Patna, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru, which fell behind Vizag in the rankings.
Pune topped the list for the first time in the annual survey followed by Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhubaneswar, and Surat.
The annual survey, which is being conducted for the past 5 years, has catered importance to Visakhapatnam for the first time.
Bengaluru, which stood sixth in the survey that was conducted in 2013, fell down to the bottom of the list over the span of four years. Surat, on the other hand, has been the biggest gainer from 2016, jumping 12 positions to the 5th spot. Hyderabad bagged the eight spot on the ASICS survey.
