Demanding Special Category Status (SCS) and railway zone for Andhra Pradesh, with Visakhapatnam as the headquarters, a Mahapadayatra is being held in Visakhapatnam from March 21. The Mahapadayatra will be organised until March 29, and will cover all the 72 wards in the city.
The nine-day protest, which is aimed at exerting pressure on the centre for fulfilling the promises made to Andhra Pradesh in the A.P reorganization act, is being undertaken by the Greater Visakhapatnam City Committee of the CPI(M), it has been reported.
CPM leader RKSV Kumar, on Tuesday, said that the centre had cheated the people by not implementing the promises made to the state in the past. He alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government had fallen short of honouring the commitments made in reorganisation act and all the political parties had come together to fight against the betrayal handed over by the BJP government to the people.
He informed that the Mahapadayatra would be inaugurated by former MP P. Madhu at Maddilapalem junction in the city. The protest would create awareness among the people regarding the advantages of railway zone and the employment opportunities that would be created in Andhra Pradesh with SCS.
Mr. Kumar appealed to the people to participate in the padayatra and make it a success.
