The picturesque beaches in Vizag have been standing as major attractions to both tourists and local residents. However, there exists a flip side. In spite of its alluring beauty, the sea is filled with dangerous rip currents and those venturing into it are vulnerable to drowning incidents. In a major step forward, an initiative, called ‘Swim N Survive’ project, will soon be launched in Vizag to keep a check on the alarming number of deaths that have been taking place over the past few years.
Reportedly, the State Government of Andhra Pradesh has joined hands with a few private organizations to set up swimming facilities in the city. The project will be executed with support from the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP).
Speaking to the Times of India, the District Collector K. Bhaskar said that he has asked SAAP to shortlist suitable places within the city where swimming pools can be set up. “Children should be taught swimming from an early age as a safety measure as well as a sport. Moreover, the training provided will also help them be more confident while playing in the sea, should any untoward incident occur. Along with children, lifeguards will also be provided with the appropriate training,” he was quoted as saying.
Reportedly, every year an average of 50 people have drowned in the city’s nine beaches over the past decade. The implementation of the ‘Swim N Survive’ project in Vizag aims to drastically bring down these numbers.
