Bringing the goodness of the authentic pot lassi (kulhad) lassi to Vizag, Devi and her husband Srinu, offer a variety of drinks. Recalling their trials, tribulations, and little triumphs, Srinu, the famous pot lassi maker in Vizag, shares their story.
The 34-year-old lassi maker, Srinu, and his wife had started ‘Sri Lakshmi Lassi Centre’ eight years ago. Looking back at their journey, Srinu says, “Back in 2009, I learnt about lassi making in Maharashtra. Finally, in 2013, we went ahead and set up our stall. We struggled initially for a couple of years. Owing to the quality of our lassi, our business stabilised gradually. Now, we have customers coming to our lassi centre from afar,” he smiles. It’s the friendship, he says, that he shares with his customers that helped his business grow.
Listing out their menu, he shares, “From Banaras special jaggery lassi to Maharashtra’s very own Rose Vanilla, we serve many delicious drinks. Our hot-seller is the classic Matka Dryfruit lassi.” Though there are many lassi makers in the market, it is the couple’s vision to offer lassi drinks in kulhads that sets them apart from the rest of the vendors.
Talking further about the reason behind this eco-friendly initiative, the famous pot lassi maker in Vizag says, “In order to minimise the usage of plastic, we got mud glasses on board. Our clients relish drinking lassi in authentic kulhads. We also encourage them to take their glasses home to promote eco-friendly alternatives.”
These eco-friendly lassi makers haven’t stopped here yet. Taking their business onto the internet, they upload lassi making videos on YouTube. “All you have to do is type ‘Visakhapatnam pot lassi’. You will find our videos. To reach out to us, search for ‘Sri Lakshmi Lassi Centre’ on Google,” the 34-year-old informs.
On average, they make Rs 800/- per day. When asked if the earnings are enough to take care of his family, Srinu shares that he has also taken up a part-time job as a driver to make the ends meet. “Now that I juggle between jobs, my wife looks after the ‘Sri Lakshmi Lassi Centre’. She single-handedly runs our business. She’s setting a wonderful example for our daughters. I’m extremely proud of what she does,” he adds. During this interaction, his wife, standing by his side, smiles at him, silently thanking him for his support.
