#1 Giri Pradakshina – Simhachalam

About 16 km from Vizag lies a densely wooded hill known as Simhachalam. The top of this hill is home to an ancient Vishnu temple. Constructed in the Kalinga style of architecture, Lord Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha is the presiding deity of the holy shrine. Giri Pradakshina (Walk around the hill) as the name suggests is a 32 km-long walk around the Simhachalam hills. The annual affair sees the participation of around five lakh people. The pradakshina starts at the foothills of Simhachalam. After completion of the walk, devotees take the steps for the lord’s darshan.

#2 Chandanotsavam – Simhachalam

Held in the month of April or May, this ritual is also organised at Simhachalam temple. The idol is perpetually covered with Sandalwood paste (chandanam) throughout the year. On the eve of Akshaya Tritiya, the lord could be seen without chandanam layer, which is also known as Nijaroopa Darshanam.

#3 Vinayaka Chaviti – Sri Sampath Vinayagar Temple

Vinayaka Chaviti festivities are celebrated with much pomp at the popular Sri Sampath Vinayagar Temple. During the pooja, the idol is beautifully decorated with vibrant garlands, turmeric, and sandal paste. Despite being situated by one of the busiest lanes of Vizag, the place echoes in serenity and divinity.

#4 Navratri – Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple

Though regular pujas and sevas are conducted by the priests, Navratri celebrations at Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple are something one shouldn’t miss. Filled with festive fervour, the nine-day long celebrations at the holy shrine are definitely a sight to behold.

#5 Jatara – Karakachettu Polamamba Temple

The biggest festival of Karakachettu Polamamba Temple, “the Jatara” happens in January, just after Sankranti. It is a 12-day annual celebration that attracts more than a million devotees.

#6 Ratha Yatra – Jagannatha Swamy Temple

The 180-year-old temple has been witnessing devotees in large numbers, especially during the holy period of Ratha Yatra. Another great festival is the Kalyanostavam in the Month of Vysakha. In Sravan masam, special prayers to the goddess of wealth and the consort of Sri Mahavishnu, Lakshmi Devi are largely attended. The Margasira ‘Kumkumarchana’ and Akasa Deepardhana ceremony are popular amongst the locals.

PS: Comment the special events of temples in your localities and share their significance.
