The Union government’s move to disinvest in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has been met with opposition from all quarters in Andhra Pradesh, with the employees continuously holding protests on the issue. Protests were conducted in Delhi and in Visakhapatnam, padayatras and maha padayatras were also held against the move. Extending his support, Actor-politician, and JanaSena Party (JSP) President, Pawan Kalyan is set to visit Vizag to join the protests against Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation.
Sharing the news, JanaSena Party Political Secretary, Dr P Hari Prasad informed that Pawan Kalyan will arrive at the Ukku protest site in Vizag on 31 October 2021. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prasad said that a meeting will be organised at 2PM in Vizag on the same day, on the occasion of the visit of Pawan Kalyan. Pointing out that the JSP has been on the forefront to fight for the cause, he reminded that Mr Kalyan had met Home Minister, Amit Shah, in Delhi and raised the issue of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation.
It could be noted that the last visit of Pawan Kalyan to Visakhapatnam was in 2019. He had participated in a long march organized against the sand policy in Andhra Pradesh. The long march was held from the Telugu Talli statue at Maddilapalem, and passed through Rama Talkies and Asilmetta before concluding at the Mahatma Gandhi statue located opposite the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) office.
On the other hand, in a significant stride, towards materialising the decision to privatise the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), the Central Government has recently shortlisted bidders for executing the 100 percent strategic disinvestment of the plant in Vizag. Reportedly, the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Finance Secretary, Rajesh Kumar received seven bids for legal advisors and five for transaction advisors. In the pre-qualification meeting, of the seven bids received for legal advisors, five were shortlisted.
