Unfortunate news of an acid attack has put the entire city in a tizzy. This time the victim happens to be a life saver himself. A paediatrician at Seven Hills Hospital, the victim is one Balaji Bhusan Patnaik. An oriya speaking doctor hailing from Cuttack, he had moved to Vizag 3 years back. The acid attack on his poor doctor had pushed the police department into a thinking mode. The modus operandi of the culprits is fairly simple and anybody could fall victim. It is the first case of an attack of such nature where the attackers and the motive are unknown.
This incident occurred late at night on Tuesday. The young doctor was returning home from work and the attack took place near his home in Pandimetta area. It is speculated that he was followed from the hospital itself and was cornered in a secluded spot. The attackers rammed their bike into his car deliberately. When the victim came out to inspect, he was doused with acid by one of the attackers. The emerging picture points at two attackers. The acid has been pronounced to be concentrated nitric acid as per assessment.
The doctor was rushed to the hospital immediately after the acid attack. The burns sustained by him are very severe. The danger is to his eyes especially. An emergency eye surgery has been performed on him.
The police are investigating the attack from all possible directions. They are trying to ascertain the motive behind this well planned attack. Whether it is a case of grudge, patient revenge or so is being investigated. CCTV footage is being taken in for evidence and teams for investigation have been formed.
