There is a demand for setting up the upcoming All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS in Vizag instead of Amaravathi. The point that is being raised here is that all the development is concentrated in Amaravathi only. It looks like the capital centrist development that the CM had done earlier in Hyderabad. A possible out take of such a course would be discontent among the other 13 districts of AP. The recent case of AIIMS, put the issue forward regarding decentralizing development across Andhra Pradesh.
The voices raised for this issue are Justice BN Sri Krishna Committee, Sivaramakrishnan Committee, former Minister Konathala Ramakrishna and others. they are asking the TDP to fulfill the promise made to people regarding decentralized development.
VIMS, Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences – The 400 bed VIMS which is lying unused could be the site for locating the AIIMS since the building and infrastructure there is partially ready. The existing structure could be put to use and Vizag would have the premier medical institute in the education hub. Converting it rather than locating it in Guntur makes more sense as pointed out by Konthala. The site at Guntur for AIIMS is an empty tract of land right now. Requirements of medical infrastructure is also very high as pointed out by him. The infant mortality as also maternal mortality was the highest in North Andhra.
The bid is to avoid North Andhra from being left out in the development portfolio.
