Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are mired in fresh controversy over the Krishna river waters. Krishna water was released from Pothireddypadu Head Regulator at Jupadu Bungalow Mandal in Kurnool district for Rayalseema. The gates were lifted for waters of the Srisailam Reservoir. This immediately elicited a letter from Telangana government to Krishna River Water Management Board. The letter stated that Andhra Pradesh had no right to utilize water by diverting it. The action was termed illegal.
The Pothireddypadu Head Regulator is on Srisailam Right Main canal and water flows into the regulator through gravity. This happens after the water level in Srisailam rises above 854 ft. The recent water inflows have raise the level to 859.2 ft and water has flowed into the regulator.
While Andhra Pradesh claims discharge of 1500 cusecs, the Telangana state has alleged it is 5000 cu secs. This incident has coincided with CM’s visit to Rayalseema Town after Polavaram Dam. The farmers and residents were parched and had lost all hopes. The release of the water was cheered by them. The lack of clear guidelines on water sharing is becoming an issue.
While Telangana is stating water theft, Andhra Pradesh has sent an SOS that it was only 1500 cusecs for drinking water purposes. As per agreement it is within permissible volume of water withdrawal. Water Resource Minister is acting upon it by drafting a notice to clarify the legal stand.
