You read that right. The Editor-in-Chief and President of Times Now and ET Now, Arnab Goswami, resigned from the news group yesterday. Reportedly, he told his team after he’d handed in the resignation papers. Cold! While we’re assuming there was a lot of silence after that announcement was made; if reports are to be believed, no one was surprised as this was long time coming.
During his conversation with the core team, he spoke of how he came to grow as a journalist at Times Now but he did not declare his plans for the future. It has been hinted though that he has plans for independent media through digital journalism, as he did not want to get stuck with television journalism. He mentioned that in the coming years he would like to keep up with the times and he can’t do that in his present role.
At the Big Picture summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi, Goswami had said that over the next few years he could see a media bigwig from India operating on a global stage. Turns out he was not talking about Times Now!
He called the launch of Times Now in 2006 as a disruption to the industry and has reportedly promised that he will do it again. Times Now ran a ticker reading ‘Arnab Goswami is back tonight’ and there has been no official confirmation from the channel as of now.
While many will miss the entertainment that your aggressive and intense style of questioning at The Newshour was, Goswami, we wonder what you have up your sleeve next.
In another Goswami related news, he will be getting ‘Y category’ security and be under 24 hour protection from 20 security personnel as the Intelligence Bureau perceives a threat to his life after his open tirade against Pakistan for the Uri Attacks. Other journalists receiving similar security cover include – Sudhir Chaudhary – Zee News, Umesh Kumar and Ashwini Kumar Chopra – Samachar Plus.
