Of the six beaches taken up by the APTDC for development, the Thotlakonda Beach will be the first to be inaugurated. Rs 14.3 crore was sanctioned for the development and beautification of Bheemili, Manganmaripeta, Rushikonda, Sagarnagar, Thotlakonda and Yendada beaches. The Thotlakonda Beach is said to be done up in a Buddhist theme with a landscaped park in an elevated position and a flight of steps leading to the beach. Work is being carried out at the rest of the beaches. One can expect lawns, food courts, washrooms and changing areas at the renovated beaches.
The District Collector, Pravin Kumar, has asked the tourism department to speed up the renovation of Thotlakonda Beach. The Rs 2.5 crore sanctioned for Thotlakonda Beach is being used to put up shacks, a restaurant and green parks with sit-outs. The Executive Director of the tourism department, K Sriramulu Naidu, will maintain the shacks and restaurant till an agency is finalised. All the facilities being developed for visitors were inspected by the Collector.
The focus at Mangamaripeta will be on water sports. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the renovated beaches. The tourism department is promoting Vizag as ‘the city of hills and beaches’. Vizagites and tourists have often been left disappointed by the existing beaches. The tourism department plans to change that.
