Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP), V Vijayasai Reddy, revealed on Thursday that the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport, near Vizag, will have a dedicated cargo-handling facility. He was virtually attending a webinar called ‘Air Cargoing Andhra Pradesh’, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and Vizag Industrial Scan. Mr. Reddy stated that the Bhogapuram International Airport is the highest priority of the Andhra Pradesh State Government.
In the webinar, MP Vijayasai Reddy illustrated the role that the air cargo industry has to play in taking forward the logistics ecosystem of Andhra Pradesh. He said that the proposed Bhogapuram International Airport will be equipped with top-of-the-class infrastructure and will contain a dedicated cargo facility. Mr. Reddy also pointed out that the exporters in the state don’t need to go to Hyderabad or Bengaluru to export their cargo. Instead, they can make use of the air cargo facilities available in the state.
The Rajya Sabha MP had earlier revealed that work on the Bhogapuram International Airport will begin around the end of 2021. This announcement had come after a long period of doubt. This greenfield international airport is going to replace the existing Visakhapatnam International Airport.
To be built in an area of 2,200 acres in Vizianagaram District, Bhogapuram Airport is expected to have a terminal handling capacity of around 63 lakh passengers per annum, which will make it one of the top airports in the country. It is one of the most-anticipated projects in Visakhapatnam.
