Bollywood desperate for a hit after a string of failures

The Hindi film industry has been passing through a tough phase lately. Eight months into the year, the success rate of Bollywood is considerably low. Many Hindi movies have hit the screens this year but only a few have managed to enjoy favourable results. Even the big names have failed to deliver the good this year. Let’s look into the details of the current scenario.

The details of Bollywood’s misfortunes in 2017

Bollywood got off to the worst start possible in 2017. OK Jaanu and Nawazuddin’s Haramkhor failed miserably at the box office and couldn’t begin the year with a bang. The republic day saw two big starts lock horns. Shahrukh Khan’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil both released on the same day and received a decent response. While the box office collections of these movies don’t justify these superstars’ star power, they managed to cross the 100 crore mark.

Akshay Kumar once again struck gold with his Jolly LLB 2 which released in February. The Ghazi Attack starring Rana Daggubati received positive reviews from the critics. Varun Dhawan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania too did pretty well at the box office. Apart from these, other movies didn’t do quite well. Films such as Naam Shabana, Rangoon, Begum Jaan, Noor, and Philauri had a pathetic run at the BO.

In April, the cash registers were taken by storm with  Baahubali 2’s release. The magnum opus, which is a South-Indian movie, went on to collect 1500 crores worldwide. It also became the first Hindi movie to collect 500 crores in the domestic market.

What followed Baahubali were some real tough times for Bollywood. Apart from Hindi medium, no movie managed to catch the audience’s eye. While Sarkar 3 proved to be a box-office dud,  Arjun Kapoor’s Half Girlfriend and Susanth Singh Rajput’s Raabta became the new themes for social media trolls.

Big names and big disappointments

Even the big names couldn’t manage to save the BO. Salman Khan’s Tubelight released amidst huge expectations only to leave the fans disappointed. The movie was thrashed by the audience and critics alike and failed to do decent business. Same is the story for Ranbir Kapoor’s Jagga Jasoos which couldn’t even manage to cross the 50 crore mark.

SRK’s recently released film, Jab Harry met Sejal is also doing pretty poor business. It has managed to collect only 45 crores in its first 3 days which is no way near to King Khan’s usual collections.

Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that this is probably the worst of Bollywood with films like Tubelight, Jagga Jasoos, Munna Michael and Jab Harry met Sejal being flopped. He feels that Bollywood should look forward to Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha to once again revive the Industry from consecutive failures.
