Two year old NGO We Can does its best to bridge the gap between private schools and government schools. The initiative was taken up when Kishore, the founder and President of We Can noticed a difference in the way children are brought up in private and government body surroundings. He observed the sub-par quality of education children in the government school located near his hostel were provided. They lacked even the basic amenities like books and stationary and had no progression in their all round development.
Now he and his team of volunteers ensure that students of government schools are given the basic necessities they require. “It’s easy to just donate books, but we make it a point to go to the students and interact with them first-hand. We show them interactive videos on moral values
,” says Kishore. “We also organise Parent-Teacher meetings. Our team members went to the students’ homes and worked hard to pull the parents out from rural Vizag,” he adds. The team of We Can, the faculty and parents went on to discuss the facilities provided by the government and made out plans for the development of the child.
We Can covers 9 schools in Vizag, Ongole and Hyderabad. What was initially financed by the team of the NGO now gets immense support from the public who truly understand the cause. An initiative called ‘Daan Utsav’ was conducted by the government of India in 2009 to contribute to society. ‘Daan Utsav’ is celebrated as the Joy of Giving Week from 2-8 October.
We Can conducted an awareness rally at RK Beach, raised funds in CMR Central and conducted a medical camp in Kancharapalem to mark the occasion. There are plans for an annadanam in the next few days. The team of We Can were overwhelmed by the response and support they got from Vizagites, even children.
