The Visakhapatnam Port witnessed a hazardous incident on Wednesday. A foreign cargo ship dangerously tilted in the port, leaving six people injured.
The details of the cargo ship mishap
The ship has been identified as Vietnamese general cargo ship MV Hai Duong 09. Allegedly, the incident took place because of improper loading of the vessel. The iron billets were negligently loaded on one side of the ship which caused the imbalance. This imbalance caused the ship to tilt towards its starboard side and eventually rest on the berth. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
In fact, had the ship tilted the other way, it could have sunk into the water.
According to The Hindu, the cargo had 26 workers on board when the incident took place. The vessel, which began tilting immediately, settled only after hitting the berth.
Visakhapatnam Port chairman, MT Krishnababu, said that the situation was taken into control and necessary measures had been taken to ensure safety. They had taken efforts to unload the cargo so that it would be restored to balance on its own.
Reportedly, a similar incident happened way back in 1996 as well. Even then, the officials and workers managed to rescue the ship.
