Cargo train launched from Visakhapatnam to transport scrap steel

In order to facilitate quick transportation of Heavy Melting Steel (HMS) scrap cargo, Waltair Railway Division has launched a new cargo train from Visakhapatnam. The train had its maiden run flagged off by Divisional Railway Manager Anup Kumar Satpathy on Thursday at Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), Visakhapatnam.

Talking about this cargo train, DRM Satpathy spoke in Visakhapatnam, “By moving this cargo for about 2,000 km, Indian Railways is projected to earn Rs. 38,77,644 per rake. The traffic for this cargo is expected to be 2 rakes per month on average. We shall be moving at least 10 rakes shortly in this venture.”

The first rake of this HMS cargo, bound for Dhappar in Punjab was deployed from CONCOR Multi-Model Logistic Park, Visakhapatnam. The cargo was packed into the train at the factory premises. This initiative is being run by CONCOR in close coordination with the Business Development Unit (BDU) of the Waltair Division.

A team, consisting of personnel from BDU and CONCOR, had tracked down HMS scrap cargo being transported frequently by road from Dandugopalapuram, Srikakulam towards Dhappar, Ahmedgarh, Phillaur, Indore and Karambeli. The cargo train will offer a quicker and safer mode of transportation for this scrap. In order to facilitate this, the height gauges at Level Crossing gates will be modified slightly.

Recently, the Waltair Railway Division had also launched onion special trains to transport onions quickly from the Visakhapatnam region to the rest of the country. In this initiative, the first train was flagged off on 1 October 2021.
