It’s Christmas time and the festivity already seems to be in the air. Apart from the innumerable reasons to be excited, as always, we even have our favourite Santa Claus to cheer us up. Every year, thousands of cheerful kids write some of the cutest letters to their beloved Santa wanting to hear back from him. Wait a second. Do you feel disheartened thinking that these innocent kids never get a reply from Santa? Well, thanks to two wonderful organisations, you might be wrong after all. Santa’s Elves Inc. and the Santa Claus Museum organise volunteers to write back to every letter addressed to Santa.
So you write a letter just to prove that there ain’t Santa Claus out there? Nah!! You get a reply and start believing that Santa is for real.
This tradition was started by James Martin about a 100 years ago, in 1914, when a town in Indiana named Santa Claus started receiving letters that were addressed to Santa from children all over the world Understandably, this happened because the town and the post office are named as Santa Claus; the only town and post office in the world honouring Mr. Claus in this regard.
James Martin was the 14th postmaster of Santa Claus. The letters received were initially neglected but later, he felt that the kids deserve an answer, and started writing back to them.
Eventually, the activity of writing back to kids became widely popular and led to the formation of Santa’s Elves Inc, an NGO loved by all for obvious reasons. Interestingly, the volunteers here are referred to as Elves!
So every Christmas, Children get a personalised letter written in red ink on a Santa letterhead. Also, the Elves make sure that every envelope is hand addressed and mailed with the holiday postmark. They start answering the letters from 1st December to make sure they reach the kids by 25th December. Oh and by the way, do make sure that your letters reach Santa’s Elves by 21st December if you want a cherishable reply from Santa.
So when your belief starts fading out, try this out for there are elves out there waiting for your letters.
