On the day of the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup game, a cricket betting racket in Vizag was busted by the Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB). Investigating this case, SEB officials arrested one person, on Sunday at Madhavadhara, and seized Rs. 88,000 cash from him.
The accused has been identified as L Prabhakar, who hails from Anakapalle and currently resides in Madhavadhara.
Acting on a credible tip, the Divisional Task Force (DTF), a wing of the Special Enforcement Bureau in Vizag, conducted a raid at Madhavadhara and busted this cricket betting racket. Further investigation by the officials has revealed that Prabhakar was only a pawn following instructions while the true mastermind of this operation resides in Bengaluru. According to the police, as many as 13 punters were involved in this betting operation.
The accused used to run his betting operation through using various mobile apps. Two mobile phones and a laptop which were being used for illegal betting were also seized by SEB from the accused.
As it is, cricket betting and gambling in India are illegal. However, during big matches like the one on Sunday, a surge in betting activities is witnessed. Cricket betting is a crime that has shown its ugly head in Vizag in recent years. Back in June 2021, another cricket betting racket had been busted which was betting on the 2021 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
