Organic Superfood in our kitchens we use daily, the humble Curry Leaf.

Curry leaves are the stuff of our fondest childhood memories. The tadka in the dals and curries and the chutneys with dosas. The aromatic and tangy addition amps the taste of any humble homemade fare. Found mostly in tropical and sub-tropical areas, the curry leaf is of Indian origin. A host of benefits can be accrued from this organic wonder which has anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and other properties.

Some of the most important benefits of this organic local produce are –

  1. Fights tummy infections – Research shows that carbazole extract from curry leaves has miraculous properties to stop diarrheal infections. The leaves can be ground up or comsumed as a paste or juice.
  2. Protects gastro-intestinal tract – As per ayurvedic practices, curry leaves are recommended for gastro-intestinal issues. They have mild laxative properties. Curry leaves can be consumed with lime juice or buttermilk and taken on an empty stomach in the morning.
  3. Provides anti-oxidants – Curry leaves are a good source of anti-oxidants. Furthermore, the presence of vitamins A, B , C and E hep in reducing oxidative stress. Curry leaves in curries, stews etc are all effective.
  4. Anti-diabetic goodness – Curry leaves are known to posses anti-hyperglycemic properties that are extremely beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels.
  5. Fight against cancer – Curry leaves carry phenols as a constituent that helps fight some cansers. Leukemia, prostrate cancer and colorectal cancers can be kept at bay by consuming curry leaves. The carbazole alkaloids in it are also anti-cancerous.
  6. Helps lower cholesterol – Bad cholesterol is cut by consuming curry leaves. They are known to fight LDL cholesterol levels.
  7. Makes hair healthy – Curry leaves are known for miracle treatment of hair. Dry curry leaf powder mixed in oil can be massaged into hair for goodness. It delays greying of hair and helps prevent balding.
  8. Boosts eyesight – The vitamin A in curry leaves carries carotenoids that are useful for keeping eyes healthy. It protects the cornea and prevents cloudiness in the eyes.
  9. Protects the liver – Curry leaves are a good source of hepato-protective extracts such as tannins and carbozole alkaloids. They help in protecting our liver from diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis.
  10. Healing for skin – The juice or paste of curry leaves can be applied on burns, cuts, bruises, irritations etc for quick recovery.
