The authorities in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have been bracing for the arrival of the Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Fani’. Expected to make a landfall between Gopalpur and Chandbali in Odisha, ‘Fani’ is likely to affect the weather in Vizag as well. As per the forecasts, the Cyclonic Storm would be accompanied by heavy rains, gusty winds (above 150 kmph in speed), and thunderstorms.
With the Cyclone barreling towards the East Coast, the weather has already changed in the city over the past few hours. Speaking to Yo! Vizag, an official from the Control Room at the Collectorate said, “‘Fani’ is likely to cross the coast in Odisha, which might affect the stretch from Vizag to Yelamanchili. While moderate rains are likely to be experienced in Vizag on Wednesday and Thursday, the districts of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam might receive heavy rains.” The authorities have stepped up the vigil and people living in the low-lying areas have already been alerted. “The Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ (pronounced as ‘FONI’) over Westcentral & adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, moved northwestwards with a speed of about 10 kmph in last 06 hours and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of 01st May, 2019 over Westcentral & adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, near Latitude 13.9°N and Longitude 84.0°E, about 680 Km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha) and 430 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It is very likely to move
northwestwards during next 12 hours and thereafter recurve north-northeastwards and cross Odisha Coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali, to the south of Puri around 3rd May afternoon with maximum sustained wind of speed 175-185 Kmph gusting to 205 Kmph,” a bulletin by IMD, released at 10:30 am, read.
