Dolphins Nose: Amazing facts about Vizag’s natural wonder.

One of the most beautiful places of Vizag, Dolphins Nose is a natural wonder. It is one of the most sought after tourist spots in town. Clearly visible from all parts of the city, Dolphins Nose derives it’s name from it’s distinctive shape.

While Dolphins Nose is clearly visible to all, not much about it is known. Here are some mind blowing facts about it that you should know.

  1. The lighthouse that is situated on Dolphins nose was built in the mid 1960s. There was an even older one at the very spot which did not survive the 1874 cyclone. It was constructed in 19th century and estimates say 1860. Traces of the old lighthouse remain still and can be seen in remnants of the basement.
  2. A famous naval battle has been fought by the foothill of Dolphins nose. It was fought between the French and the British in the year 1804.
  3. The current light house helps to track cyclones from the Dolphin Nose hill top. It carries the necessary equipment.
  4. Words of the locals carry that a school of Dolphins is often sighted there. But whether true or not is not proved. Romantic theories surround the appearance and dis-appearance  of the dolphins.
  5. Dolphins Nose also goes by the name of ‘Yarada Konda’. The fishing village by the same name and nestled by the hill is a must visit.
  6. It is the only channel in the world that has multiple religious shrines guarding safe naval passage. The temple atop Dolphins Nose is the Sagar Matha temple. There is also the 700 year old Ishaq Medina Dargah there. Sailors and navy men seek blessing of both while entering and exiting harbor.
  7. For one to go to Dolphins Nose from the city, there is only a circuitous route. Much earlier it was not so. Vizag city was connected to the hill by a strip of beach land. That is no more.
