Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials seized gold worth Rs 1.08 crores at Visakhapatnam railway station on Tuesday. Acting on a special tip-off, the officials intercepted two individuals in Train No. 12514 Guwahati-Secunderabad Express at the city’s railway station.
As informed by DRI officials, the accused were carrying the gold concealed in specially designed packets of the cotton vests worn by them. The total weight of the smuggled gold was reported to be 3314 grams, valued at Rs 1.08 crores. The gold has been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Reportedly, the gold was smuggled into India from Myanmar. The gold was handed over to the individuals for an onward journey from Secunderabad. The accused admitted that they had no valid documents that showed the legal purchase of the seized gold. The officials are investigating further to gain more insights.
It may be recalled that earlier, 1992 grams of gold was seized at Visakhapatnam railway station. The accused, in this case, was caught while travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in train no 15630. Valued at close to Rs 63 lakhs, Rs 1.60 lakhs were stated as the sale proceeds of smuggled gold seized under the provisions of The Customs Act, 1962.
