Tragedy struck Visakhapatnam on Monday when an explosion occurred at a firecracker manufacturing unit at Gullepalli under Sabbavaram mandal. The explosion in Visakhapatnam left several individuals, who were working at the unit, severely injured. They were soon rushed to a hospital for treatment.
As per the details provided by the police, Eenadu reported that the firecracker unit was being handled by Dasari Satyanarayana. With a fire accident taking place at his unit in 2012, the government authorities had revoked his license to manufacture firecrackers. However, with the arrival of the election season, Satyanarayana began manufacturing firecrackers without any official permit.
With a sudden outbreak of fire at the unit on Monday, as many as seven individuals, working there, got entangled in flames caused by an explosion. And given the relatively smaller dimensions of the unit, the workers were cramped for room and couldn’t get escape the flames. The fire brigade swung into action and, with the help of locals, shifted the injured to the King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam.
The police said that two among those who have been admitted to the hospital, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. The deceased have been identified as Kothamma (21) and Durga Rao (58). Reportedly, the condition of others, who sustained third-degree burns, is known to be critical.
