In what is coming as a shocking news, a student at GITAM University, Visakhapatnam has committed suicide by jumping off a building on the campus. The deceased, a native of Hyderabad, has been identified as Rishi Varma, a first-year B. Pharmacy student at the University.
As per a report in Deccan Chronicle, Rishi was caught by the hostel warden after he allegedly consumed alcohol. The matter was subsequently escalated to the boy’s parents which apparently prompted Rishi to take the fatal step. As per the sources, the 18-year-old jumped off from the 8th floor of the Pharmacy building and ended his life.
The parents have been informed about the unfortunate incident and will arrive in Vizag today. Arilova police have registered a case and investigation is going on to gain further incidents.
Wednesday’s incident has brought yet another incident of student suicide to light. While many students are ending their lives on account of the excessive pressure being exerted on them, incidents such as these bring another perspective into the raging debate.
On the one hand, some argue that the college managements and parents must be more cordial and understanding in their approach towards the students. On the other hand, a few argue that students must be possessed with “thick-skin” and better mental stability in order to face challenges that lie ahead in their prospective journeys.
