In what came as yet another shocking case of smuggling through Vizag, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials seized 1992 grams of gold at the city’s railway station.
Acting on a special tip, the officials got hold of a passenger during the early hours of Sunday. The passenger, who was travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in train no 15630, was inspected by the officers. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the man was transporting gold in the form of sheets being carried in two bags and a gold biscuit concealed in a musical instrument.
The seized gold, which amounted to 1992 grams, was being smuggled from Myanmar to Chennai, it has been reported. The passenger admitted to the fact that the gold was brought illegally into the country and didn’t have any documents to prove its legal purchase.
Valued at close to Rs 63 lakhs, Rs 1.60 lakhs have been stated as the sale proceeds of smuggled gold seized under the provisions of The Customs Act, 1962. The passenger has been taken into custody and was interrogated by the officials to gain further insights.
Earlier, the DRI officials had caught hold of a few passengers at Vizag railway station while they were smuggling 1125 start tortoises to Bangladesh. Acting on the intelligent reports received, the DRI had carried out a search operation on the Yashvantpur-Howrah Express. The tortoises were stuffed in cotton bags and were being illegally transported to India’s neighbouring country.
