GVMC Commissioner M Hari Narayanan has instructed officials to set up a green belt for the Maddilapalem to airport stretch along NH-16.
They have been instructed to plant saplings in the vacant spaces along the stretch. They will be planted at the central medians and sub-medians with proper fencing in place to protect them.
The GVMC Commissioner inspected the stretch from Maddilapalem to airport yesterday and found it short of greenery. He reportedly imposed a fine on Bajaj Spares and Jyothi Car Care for damaging the road and encroaching the green belt area.
The GVMC has been working hard to turn the city green ever since cyclone Hudhud had an adverse effect on it. They spent Rs 90 crore facelifting the city before IFR last year. Rs 44 crore of that money was spent on improving a 60 km stretch alone. Highways and the stretch along Beach Road from Coastal Battery to Tenneti Park also had greenery raised. But there’s only so much the GVMC can do when Vizagites don’t respect the green belts and treat it like trash cans.
