As part of the drive towards making Visakhapatnam a greener city, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has been taking quite a few measures such as introducing eco-friendly vehicles and setting up of electric charging stations in the city. Accordingly, it also granted 30 electric cars to the Visakhapatnam district.
Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) had earlier rolled out the first batch of 10 electric cars in Vizag. Subsequently, 20 more electric cars have arrived in the city on Sunday. The GVMC’s mechanical department plans to distribute these vehicles to the GVMC officials.
Reportedly, while the electric cars, from the first batch, run up to 100 kilometers on a single charge with great difficulty, the new cars, which arrived in the second batch, are expected to run up to 180 kilometers on a single charge.
It may be noted that AP Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu had flagged off two e-cars – Tata Tigor and Mahindra e-Verito at the CII Partnership Summit 2018 in Vizag. These cars were purchased at the cost of Rs.12 lakhs each. Notably, this was the very first official rollout of electric cars in India.
As reported recently, GVMC even brought an electric bus to the city for conducting a trial run to determine whether to bring more electric buses to the city, for operating them in the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor.
