The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) will be extending the Smart Streets project to 34 more roads, spanning over 11.5 km in the city. The smart streets project that stretches up to 19.5 km is already underway at 20 roads. The project is expected to cost GVMC about Rs 130 crores.
GVMC has taken up the project with a concept of Complete Streets. The civic body of Visakhapatnam will be having dedicated pedestrian zones and cycle tracks. Roads will also undergo a few changes in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The streets are expected to be lined with greenery and will be lit up with adequate lighting during the nights.
As part of this second phase of the street beautification project, the roads to be developed include Netaji road, Dandu Bazaar road, AN Beach hospital road, KDPM school road, a smart city project official from GVMC informed while speaking to TOI.
Reportedly, in recent years, there has been an increase of about 9% in the vehicular growth rate in the city. There has also been an increase in the number of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, hypertension etc. according to the health statistics of the citizens.
GVMC seems to have taken up this project with an aim to make the city’s environment better for the citizens.
