Indian Navy hosts an expo & seminar to mark the golden jubilee of Naval Dockyard

The Indian Navy has organised an expo and technical seminar as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Naval Dockyard. The expo is mainly focused on the theme ‘Make in India initiatives relevant to the Indian Navy.

The seminar and expo during the golden jubilee celebrations of the Naval Dockyard were inaugurated by Flag Officer Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Commanding in Chief, Vice Admiral, Biswajit Dasgupta. During the inauguration ceremony, Chief of Materiel, Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, addressed the theme, and the keynote address was given by JD Patil Director and Senior Executive Vice- President Larsen & Toubro India (L&T India).

During the Seminar, eminent speakers from the Indian Navy, Indian Defence Industry and DRDO exchanged ideas to further the cause of Atmanirbhata in Defence Production and Maintenance. The Seminar and Expo witnessed the Navy and Industry reps enriching each other with their insights, with recommendations to progress the partnership to the next level.

The seminar witnessed the navy and industry experts exchanging ideas on Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan or Make in India initiatives in the fields of Defence Production and Maintenance.

The Tech Expo showcased a Kaleidoscope, which is an offering by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Industry. The objective of this expo is to improve the Indigenisation of the Indian Defence Sector. Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) have been playing a critical role in the indigenisation of defence industries.

It could be noted that the Naval Dockyard has transformed a lot over the 50 years. It all started with the boat repair shop in the 1940s for the maintenance of the Royal Indian Naval Ships and today they provide technical support to the Ships and Submarines in the Eastern Naval Command. In the 1950s the Boat repair shop was upgraded into a Base Repair Organization, and in 1968 the construction of the Naval Dockyard started.

Now the yard is being developed into a smart dockyard with the adoption of automation, IoT (Internet of Things) and the development of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solutions.
