Indian Government is giving humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh for aiding the Rohingya refugees. It is code named Operation Insaniyat. It is a humanitarian move to aid a fellow country in distress over the Rohingya refugee crisis. With 900 tons of relief packed up Indian Navy has sent INS Gharial to Chittagong Port. The ship has reached yesterday. Indian Navy has packaged the relief with consideration. The ship is carrying relief in packets for family packets containing rations, clothes, mosquito nets and daily necessary essentials. The present relief aid is estimated to help 70,000 families approximately.
After supplying the cargo of relief the Indian Navy ship will be participating in a bi-lateral naval exercise with Bangladesh Navy. INS Gharial is is the second indigenous built Landing Ship Tank (Large) commissioned on 14 Feb 1997 into Indian Navy. It is part of the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command stationed at Vizag. The ship lends itself very useful to various Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions in the past including for delivery of relief material/ supplies to Chittagong post ‘Cyclone Sidr’ in 2008. This deployment was for the sole aim of helping out on humanitarian grounds the Rohingya refugees in friendly nation, Bangladesh.
