India’s first green hydrogen-based project to come up in Vizag

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited, a state-run power giant, through an order statement by the Union Power Ministry, stated that a project of fuel-cell-based Micro-grid, with hydrogen production using electrolyzer, in NTPC guest house, has been awarded at Simhadri, near Vizag.

The green hydrogen-based microgrid project in Vizag will be India’s first green hydrogen-based energy storage project and one of the largest in the world. It would also be a precursor to large scale hydrogen energy storage projects and would be useful for studying and deploying multiple microgrids in various off-grid and strategic locations of the country.

Details of the Hydrogen Project in Vizag

The hydrogen at India’s first hydrogen-based microgrid project will be produced using the advanced 240 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser, by taking the input power from the nearby floating solar project. The hydrogen which will be produced during sunshine hours will be stored at high pressure and will be electrified using a 50 kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. As per the official notification, the system will work in standalone mode from 5 PM in the evening to 7 AM in the morning.

In a statement by NTPC, the state-run power giant said ”This unique project configuration is designed in-house by NTPC. This unique project for India would open doors for decarbonising the far-off regions of the country like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) etc., hitherto dependent on diesel generators. The project is in-line with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister for becoming carbon neutral by 2070 and making Ladakh a carbon-neutral territory”.

The present installed capacity of the state-run power giant is 67,907.5 MW comprising 47 NTPC stations and 26 joint ventures stations.

This decision to set up a green hydrogen project in Vizag comes in the backdrop of the firm’s pivot towards green energy. NTPC Group posted a net profit of $1.85 billion in FY21. It has also set an aim of a 10 percent reduction in net energy intensity.
