Workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) lashed a movie theatre manager in Pune on Thursday while protesting against high rates on popcorn, beverages and other food items in a movie theatre.
In a video, the movie theatre manager was found being slapped and abused by the MNS workers.
In Pune, MNS workers outbursted that almost every movie theatre management is selling popcorn of Rs 5 for Rs 250 though Bombay High Court ordered the need for the reduction of food prices.
Speaking to news agency ANI, one of the MNS workers who hit the manager, Kishor Shinde said, ” We asked the manager to read news reports, he said, don’t know how to read Marathi. Then we dealt with him MNS style.”
On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court said that food prices at each movie theatre are high. “In some multiplexes, food items are more expensive than the movie tickets”, the bench said.
“We understand if the state can’t permit the public to carry food from home. But, then why can’t it step in and regulate the prices of food sold inside the cinema theatres”, the bench questioned.
Referring to senior citizens, the bench said that those who are suffering from medical conditions like diabetes often need an intake of food in regular intervals. Not everyone would be able to afford food at such expensive rates.
“Basically, you (the association, multiplex owners etc) are compelling the public to purchase and consume what you sell at a price that suits you,” the bench mentioned.
The bench has directed the state to file a report on the issue and clear the problem within 4 weeks.
