An open letter by a mother on the occasion of Mother’s Day

“I woke up in the morning, excited and hoping that my only son would spend at-least this one day( mother’s day) with me, showing all his love, care, and affection. He woke up early and started to get ready which excited me. By the time I came out of the kitchen, to get the breakfast to be served on the table, the room of his door was left open, the shoes in his rack missing and his bike under the shed unfound. I, accustomed to assuming him for going out on some work, waited for him to arrive by lunch-time. The empty plates lay on the table while I was scrolling on my WhatsApp

. I found a picture of mine as my son’s status which said, ‘Happy mother’s day Mom! You’re the best mom on earth, Love you!’. I was very happy for his virtual wishes, expecting him to return home for the real ones. All the anticipation slowly started to fade away when the hands of the clock struck 12 in the night, the plates on the table left light, the hot-packs heavy, mind filled with thoughts and a loving heart left empty.”

This is an open letter by a mother on mother’s day. Everyone knows about the various tasks a mother does, the pressure she consumes, the time constraint she has, the tension she feels when doubtful of incomplete chores.

To recognise all such hard work a mother does, without taking a day off, Mother’s day is celebrated honoring the mother of the family, most commonly in the months of March and May. Unfortunately, the whole concept of privilege or spending quality amount of time with mothers on mother’s day is misunderstood. Mother’s day was declared just to acclaim the tough grind work a mother does, but is not meant to be the only day on which she should be considered the same way, given recognition, spent time with, to be cared, and most importantly ‘to be loved back’.

The internet is a blessed place where people are able to seek help for various problems like loneliness, depression, anxiety, etc. Mothers today, are searching for strategies to survive loneliness. For some mothers, the day is bittersweet, sorrowful to some, a routine day to the other.

This post is the true voice of many mothers across the world, who urge to confess their hidden sorrow that they need not be esteemed, gifted or over-cared on a single day, but only crave for that unconditional love which lasts for long is what they crave for. So people, pledge to make every day a mother’s day!
