It was not just India’s crushing defeat against England that made the headlines post the third match at Headingley. After Joe Root hit the winning runs and handed over a famous victory to his team, cameras caught MS Dhoni, before returning to the dressing room, quietly asking umpires for the match ball. While the gesture hasn’t been officially confirmed to convey anything yet, MSD’s fans set Twitter ablaze with messages speculating his retirement going viral. Others feel that this might be an indication of the Indian cricketer’s last game in England.
“Retirement announcement coming soon! Asia cup would be the last get go I think,” commented another Twitter user.
MS Dhoni has come under heavy criticism for his sluggish knock in the second and third ODIs of the recently concluded series. While his 59-ball-37 didn’t help the team’s cause while chasing a daunting target in the second game, his 42 runs off 66 balls too didn’t go down well with his critics. Indian opener Gautam Gambhir too came out and said that Dhoni’s batting style has put the remaining batsmen under pressure.
The wicket-keeper batsman, who celebrated his 37th birthday on 7th July, stands as one of the greatest Indian batsmen in the shorter formats of the game. The man from Ranchi also went past the 10,000 run mark in ODIs recently.
