A cinematic tension prevails around the suspicious case of a Bengal student who died reportedly due to a fall from the fourth floor at a hostel in Visakhapatnam on 14 July 2023. This incident came to light on 19 August 2023 after the parents raised their voices, alleging their daughter was killed, contrary to the hostel authorities’ statement that the girl committed suicide. According to the bereaving parents, Riti (17), who passed the 10th standard exams this year, came to the city in May for further studies and medical entrance exam coaching.
Sukdeb Saha, the girl’s father, claimed his daughter was strong-willed and spoke to him on a call the day before this incident. Per his statement, he received a call on 15 July from the hostel management, who informed him that Riti had fallen from the building’s terrace. Sukdeb and his wife immediately rushed to the city from Kolkata the same day. They found that their daughter had not been treated yet due to improper facilities at the hospital the hostel management admitted her to.
Later, Riti was shifted to another hospital, where she breathed last due to cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure on 16 July. Stating inconsistencies in the hostel management’s statements and a buried truth around their daughter’s untimely demise, the parents petitioned at the AP High Court. According to the father, the hostel warden stated that the girl fell on the stairs while their initial reports mentioned a fall from the terrace. He also pointed out the inaction of the city police in gathering the requisite evidence from the hostel.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mourned the shocking loss and spoke to the parents on Saturday. She affirmed them of help and stated that a team of Bengal Police would be sent to Visakhapatnam, where the student mysteriously died. The AP HC appointed a commissioner to probe this case and will submit a report within 15 days.
