Commemorating the Missile Man of India, Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) inaugurated a statue of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at their premises in Vizag on Friday. This was done, marking the 90th birth anniversary of the former Indian President. This memorial was titled “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Prerana Sthal”.
A golden statue of Dr. Kalam was unveiled by Dr. Samir V Kamat, Outstanding Scientist and Director General (Naval Systems & Materials) at NSTL. Outstanding Scientists PVS Ganesh Kumar, BVSS Krishna Kumar, Dr. A Krishna Kumar, other scientists and members of NSTL were also present at this event. NSTL products Varunastra, TAL, and Maareech were also displayed at the venue.

Dr. Y Sreenivas Rao, Director of NSTL was also in attendance during the inauguration ceremony. During the inauguration, he talked about the purpose of the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Prerana Sthal which will provide motivation to the workforce of NSTL and the public of Vizag. He also spoke about the late aerospace scientist’s incredible achievements in the field of defence and the work he did as President of India, saying that his contribution to this nation will continue to inspire the people.
In his memory and to celebrate his accomplishments, DRDO has organised an innovation contest in which individuals and startups from all over India can enroll and exhibit their disruptive ideas and concepts in technologies identified by DRDO. Participants have the opportunity to win prize money of upto Rs. 10 lakh. The last date to apply for this contest is 1 December 2021.

One of the premier laboratories of the government-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), NSTL is located in Vizag. DRDO, in particular, holds Dr. Kalam in high stead, for his work at the organisation, which culminated in the development of the missiles Prithvi and Agni. Fondly known as the Missile Man of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was not just a revolutionary scientist but also a people’s President, loved and respected by all. The youth of the country, especially students, were very fond of him.
