An operation on a child has been botched in a leading Visakhapatnam hospital and a fine of 3 lakhs has been imposed by way of compensation.
The consumer disputes redressal forum, Vizianagaram has spoken and the Manipal hospital of Visakhapatnam and a doctor there have been ordered to pay a compensation of 3 lakh INR. This is in addition to 20,000 INR to cover the litigation costs. This is in aftermath of an operation on a child in the hospital which went horribly wrong. The sufferer is a small child, Baby Namrah who is from Vizianagaram. Namrah was to be operated on by local doctors in Vizianagaram on January 26, 2014 for a nasal defect. The doctor was unwell and hence unavailable. The parents of Baby Namrah were referred to Manipal hospital of Visakhapatnam for treatment. The hospital carried out the operation on Namrah January 27, 2015 and the severity of the errors has caused baby namrah to lose her nasal septum.
What has been the conclusion of the case was the finding of sheer negligence and lack of competent service by the doctor of Manipal Hospital. The parents after the operation proceeded to file a complaint at the consumer redressal forum against the Visakhapatnam hospital, the doctor as well as the Indian Medical Academy. A thorough investigation and analysis of the case records was conducted. Forum president V. Mohan Kumar and its member V.V.L. Narasimha Rao have given due consideration to the case. The case of a hospital abusing the trust of a patient for care giving and expert professional care has been abused. The findings of the forum point towards the compensation being due considering the disfigurement and consequent difficulties to the child.
