As the pandemic situation subsides in Vizag, people are able to walk out of their houses again. Theatres in the city have been allowed to run shows by keeping only 50 percent occupancy of seats and making masks mandatory at the theatre premises. Around 12 theatres in Visakhapatnam, and 3 in rural areas, have resumed running shows after three months. On Sunday, being a weekend as well as Friendship Day, many people have been seen going for the newly released movies with friends. However, not many of them are following Covid-19 norms while inside the theatre. Despite the management at theatres running shows, with 50 percent occupancy, people going in groups in Visakhapatnam are found not maintaining social distancing.
On the other side, beaches, cafes and restaurants on Sunday were flooded with people in groups, celebrating Friendship Day. Many people have been flouting Covid-19 norms and not wearing masks in public places.
In view of the third wave threat, city police have deployed staff at around seven entry points to the Beach Road. It has been observed that many people are wearing masks while entering the RK Beach Road but remove them when sitting at the beach. In a recent review meeting, by the Centre, it was found out that 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, are reporting an increase in the daily number of Covid-19 cases or the Covid-19 positivity rate. While Vizag is currently reporting a positivity rate below 3 percent, districts with a 10 percent positivity rate have been advised to follow strict restrictions to prevent crowds in public places.
On Sunday, Vizag reported 170 Covid-19 cases in a day. Sources say that the city has seen a slow increase in cases in the last few weeks.
