Vizag played host to yet another marathon on Sunday, 25th September. The initiative for this five-k run was taken up by the Rotaract clubs of Vizag with the primary purpose of highlighting the Rotary India Literacy Mission. The run, which had around 3,000 participants, was flagged off by Minister of HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Beach Road.
The Rotary India Literacy Mission aims to reduce drop-outs from schools. Ganta Srinivasa Rao pointed out that such initiatives are extremely important in our society, where the drop-out rate among the middle and lower income groups due to financial problems is increasing rapidly. He stated that it is necessary that the sufficient financial and moral support is offered to them which encourage them to pursue higher education or completing secondary education. The students who took an active part in organising the marathon and supporting such a noble cause were the young rotarators of St. Joseph’s College for Women and Gayatri Vidya Parishad. The minister congratulated the especially for their efforts in making the marathon a success.
The marathon also saw active participation of CMR Group MD Mavuri Venkata Ramana, Rotary International District Public Relations Chairman P.L.K. Murthy, Public Relations Society of India, Visakhapatnam chapter chairman U.S. Sarma, Rotaract District Representative Alehkhya Vegi, St. Joseph’s College for Women Rotaract president Lekhna, Gayatri Rotaract Club president Pavan, Rotaract Club of Vizag Metro president Manogna and Rotaractors from both the colleges.
